Thanksgiving Graph

We did a fun sorting and graphing activity for Thanksgiving. Each student received a cup full of "runts" candy. They had to sort and graph how many they had of each kind of "fruit" in their Thanksgiving horn of plenty. I think they enjoyed eating the candy too.

Turkey Trot

Ready, set, GO!

Lined up to start the race.

Waiting in the cold.

Our school had the turkey trot the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. BRRRRRRRR!!!! It was FREEZING COLD! The first graders were pretty good sports and ran the turkey trot even though it was so cold. The first place winner for the boys was even a student from our class! Way to go! :)

Turkey Feather Pull

Waiting in line for prizes!!! :)

Here they go!!

Getting ready to chase Mr. L through the hall and pluck a feather.

Each student in our class who achieved the reading goal for November was able to participate in chasing a "turkey" to pull a feather for a prize. The reading goal each month is for every student to read 20 minutes a night and return their reading folders signed by a parent weekly. Thanks for all your support in reading at home!! A child that reads is a child that succeeds! What a fun activity to participate in!! :) When else is it ok to run in the halls and get a prize for it! Also, a BIG thanks to our Principal, Mr. L What a GREAT sport to be the turkey! :)

SOUP

Here are the students in our class enjoying the tasty soup they helped make.

This is how much soup was left over. Not very much! Most of the students in our class loved the soup and wanted 2nd helpings. :)

Our soup before we let it cook. Can you say CARROTS? We had celery, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, and a lot of carrots in our vegetable soup.

The boys and girls in our class who brought a vegetable to share.

We read the story "Stone Soup" and made our own soup. I asked each student to bring a vegetable to share in our soup. I think the most popluar vegetable was carrots. Thanks to all those who shared and made our soup so delicious! The students loved it and thought it was the "best they've ever tasted!" Here are some of the fluency poems we have been practicing about soup.

November News

Our reading reward for November: Each child who turns in their reading folder (signed by a parent) every week in November will get to chase a turkey for a chance to win prizes. Mr. Lee will be dressing up like a turkey for the students who earn the reading reward for November. If they can pluck a feather from him, they get a prize. Thanks for your help in signing and sending your child's reading folder, behavior trackers, and homework each week.

In math we have been working on more strategies for addition. We have used to learn a number line and count on from the biggest number. We will be working on more strategies for subtraction. We will also be learning fact families. We will be reviewing patterns, especially growing patterns.

A BIG THANKS to all who have sent family number books to share and returned November family art project. If your child lost their turkey to decorate please let me know and I will send a new one home.

Next Friday our class will be making stone soup. We need each student in our class to help by bringing a vegetable. Please send a vegetable that is already washed and chopped. We will make the soup on Friday November 12th.

Thanks for all you do!
