Dear Parents and Students,
This week in reading we have been working on words with long o, with silent e spelling at the end. Next week we will be working on long u, with silent e spelling at the end. We have also been working hard on our reading fluency . Please help your child practice their fluency poems that come home each Monday.
On Tuesday the 27th we will have our second DIBELS testing for the year. Please help us by having your child here and on time. Thank you for your help with weekly reading homework and reading nightly with your child. The more your child is reading and being read to, the better they will get.
In math we are finishing up our chapter on basic place value and graphing. Next week we will be doing some class surveys and graphing our results in a book your child will be bringing home. Our next chapter in math is on money. Please help your child by reviewing their math papers and helping them practice counting money with you at home. Attached to today’s news is a “bonus” math paper. Your child may finish this and return it Monday for a reward.
We have a class full of amazing authors! I am so impressed with the stories that your child is writing. It is fun to see the progress that each student has made since the beginning of the school year. We are working on adding details to our stories. We are also working on making complete sentences that begin with capitalization and end with the correct punctuation.
I just wanted to remind you and encourage you to help your child with an entry for our school writing contest. There are some great prizes for the winners. The contest ends on February 3rd. Your child may enter a fiction or non-fiction story. The story needs to be submitted in the form of a bound book- stapled, spiral, folder, yarn, etc. Their entry should have a cover that includes: title, author, illustrator (first and last name), grade level, and teacher name. Illustrations can be included, but do not have to be. If illustrations are included they must be student work. The piece must be legible or can be typed on the computer. Please remember that this must be your child’s own work. For any questions about the contest please contact our literacy coach, Mrs. Richie.

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for attending parent teacher conferences this week. I am glad to be able to meet with you and show the progress your student is making in first grade. I am excited to see each child continue to progress throughout the rest of the year.
Another big thank you for helping your child be here and on time for our block assessment this week. We had perfect attendance on Monday and Tuesday and were able to get a lot accomplished with everyone here.
Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday the 19th. Enjoy the long weekend and please help your child finish and return their family snowman art.

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I am excited to be back to school and hope you all enjoyed your Christmas vacation.
We have a busy week next week. It is our parent teacher conferences and our 3rd Language Arts block assessment testing. Please remember to be on time to your conference. If you are unable to attend at your scheduled time, please let me know so I can reschedule with you. Also, please help your child to be on time to school each day. We will be doing the majority of our block assessment in the mornings each day next week. If your child is tardy or misses that day it is difficult to get their test made up. You can also help your child be successful on the test by getting plenty of rest and a good breakfast each day.
Yesterday we had an assembly with Miss Bear River Valley, Morgan Roche. We learned more about juvenile diabetes. I hope your child came home and discussed something they learned from the assembly. We learned some helpful ways to keep our bodies healthy; eat healthy foods, get enough exercise, drink eight glasses of water a day, and get enough sleep.
I am sending home a new family art project with your student today. This will be our art displayed in the hallway for January and February. Please have them returned to school by January 20th. I am also sending home book orders for January. Book orders are due on Friday January 16, 2008.
Thank you for all you do! We have such a great class this year. I really appreciate the great support I receive from you. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at school. I look forward to meeting with you at parent teacher conferences next week.

Thank you,
Mrs. Shaffer

Happy New Year!

To begin this post, I apologize for the lack of posting in December. The month at school seemed to fly by so quickly. I was also having difficulties with the camera I use at school.
I hope you have all had a Merry Christmas. I have enjoyed the little break, and hope you have as well. I am excited to get back to school next Monday and hear about everyone's vacation. I hope you have enjoyed spending time with family and friends. I am pretty sure you have been having fun in the snow too!
I am excited to start the year 2009 in our first grade class. Thank you for being such wonderful students and supportive parents!
:) Mrs. Shaffer
